Attractions near Rieti
Known in the past as the navel of Italy for its particular position, Rieti is a pretty medieval town that is located. The city is of ancient origins and even today in its vicinity it is possible to see the ancient vestiges of the past. Rieti preserves in its small historical center several artistic beauties that are worth admiring. The main monuments of the city are in fact concentrated in the two main squares, Piazza Battisti and Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, which corresponds to the ancient...
forum of the city. Among the many beauties to visit in Rieti are: the Palazzo Comunale (of the XIII-XVIII century), which houses the collection of the Civic Museum on the History of Rieti; the Cathedral of the Assumption, built in the twelfth century and renovated in Baroque style in the seventeenth century, while maintaining the original Romanesque bell tower; the adjacent Baptistery, which houses the sacred collections of the Diocesan Museum belonging to the Diocese of Rieti; the adjoining Palazzo Vescovile, with its splendid low-medieval style and in which it is possible to visit the rich Diocesan Art Gallery; the Arco del Vescovo, a bridge built by Pope Bonifacio VIII and famous for its very bold structure; the medieval walls, with square and semicircular towers and a very well preserved structure. In the surroundings of Rieti, it is worth visiting Monte Terminillo and the Natural Reserve of the Lungo and Ripasottile Lakes. Since 2003 it is possible to follow a path of 80 kilometers, which combines the four Franciscan sanctuaries of Greccio, La Foresta, Fonte Colombo and Poggio Bustone, and which is called Cammino di Francesco. The route is born both as a religious proposal and naturalistic, in fact following the path you can trace the roads traveled by St. Francis of Assisi during his pilgrimage, also touching Rieti. Anyone traveling is provided with a sort of travel passport that is stamped at each stop. At the end of the route a Pilgrim's Certificate is issued by the Office of the Way of Francis.
