Attractions near Agnone
Agnone is located in Molise, near the border with Abruzzo, in South-Central Italy. Agnone is an old town rich in history, culture, art and Nature. Endowed with a well-preserved historical centre, Agnone has ancient origins. It was an important centre in the pre-Roman era (the Samnite civilization) as well as in the Middle Ages. Monuments, valuable houses (some of Venetian origin) and its 17 churches are all evidence of its rich history. Because of its several bell towers, Agnone is also known...
as “the town of the bells”, in fact it is home of the Marinelli Pontificial Foundry: the oldest bell foundry in the world. In the 19th century, Agnone was the most populated city of the Molise region. Sigonio defined it “one of the most conspicuous cities of the Kingdom of Naples” while D’Ovidio called it “the Athens of Samnium”. Not only was such a name given to Agnone for its architecture and for its industrious people but also for the cultural activities that had traditionally been part of town. Agnone was the home of prominent scholars who achieved significant successes both at the national and international level. One only needs to think of, among the others, Mario Ionata, author of the ‘400 poem El Giardeno or of Baldassarre Labanca, Philosopher and internationally renowned historian of Christianity. Agnone’s pedagogical tradition was also very relevant, culminating with the foundation of the “Istituto Lucci”, which is always enthusiastically remembered by Luigi Gamberale, the first Italian translator of Walt Withman’s poetry collection Leaves of Grass. Many schools have been founded and are still functioning in Agnone since the 19th century. This aspect justifies Agnone’s fame as the “City of art and culture”. For all the above-mentioned reasons, Agnone is the ideal place for studying Italian language and culture in a context defined by uncontaminated landscapes, folkloristic and gastronomic traditions, archeological finds and artistic beauty, all combined with the kindness and genuine hospitality of the local inhabitants. An unique opportunity to combine intensive studies with the knowledge of the local territory, its outstanding food products, excursions, art, music and archeology. A full immersion in an unforgettable place!
